First of all, there may be some hormonal activity in sunscreens that could cause problems later on influencing how your body is given hormones and possibility causing cancer in the future.
Second of all, some sunscreens can cause a photo allergic reaction if you happen to be the wrong type and those sunscreens interact with you.
The third thing that sun screen can cause is some tendency to stay in the sun too long. Some people put on sunscreens, stay out on the beach for six or eight hours and although they don’t burn, they had dangerous rays that are entering the skin and could cause harmful tumors like melanoma.

They do take the sun’s energy and change it into a more harmless form of energy so that there is not a sun burn, but still some of that energy gets through. With just sunscreen, you get some of that energy coming through all day long that can be causing aging, and even potentially future skin cancer. It’s important to remember that even the metallic sunscreens like zinc and titanium are usually zinc and titanium salts, they’re not the metal. You do get some energy coming through, even using those. It’s very important to remember that you need other kinds of ways of blocking the sun. The sun screen is just an added benefit to protect against reflected rays.

There are other types of cancers like basal cell and squamous cell cancers that are problematic, but are usually not fatal. There is another kind of skin cancer called melanoma which involves a dark mole that is irregular in its appearance, its color, shape and the way it behaves. Those kinds of cancer are the ones that can be fatal in many instances.
It seems that the incidence of melanoma is increasing rapidly. There might be other causes apart from sun exposure which includes the loss of the normal ozone layer which protects us, because of all fluorocarbons in sprays. It is important to do sun protection in order to prevent both aging and skin cancers.
WHAT TO DO IN YOUR 20’S TO SAVE YOUR SKIN IN YOUR 50’s

There are a lot of people who would like to get a tan when they’re young to make themselves look more attractive and look more like outdoor people. Now, that makes some sense if your whole life is outdoors but the problem with it is that the damage done begins to appear later in life and it accumulates. What you want to do is try to avoid sunburns at all costs and make sure that if you do get a little bit of sun that you protect the areas that show most.
This is a little bit different than what most people do because most women especially will get a nice tan on their ” V” neck area. You’ll notice that there are many women who continue getting that tan and by the time they hit their forties or fifties that area looks beat up with blotches and sunspots and redness and all kinds of damage. Whereas, there are other women who just get very light amount of sun and not have that damage. So you want to avoid that kind of damage to the exposed areas.
The best protection against skin cancer is to protect yourself against sunburns. Sun exposure, even without burning, could possibly contribute to that, but the worst is to use sun exposures and have so much damage that the skin can’t handle it, which usually results in redness and irritations of sunburn. In order to do that, you really need to use more than just the sunscreen.
You need to time your outdoor activities if you are fair skinned, so that you are outside before 10 or 11 in the morning or after 4 in the afternoon. It is also important to be under shade such as an umbrella or overhang of a building and also to use sun protective clothing because that protects better than sunscreens.
Sunscreens should be used in addition to protecting against the reflected light from water, sidewalks or sand. This is the start of best natural skincare.
Most sunscreens have been tested and they are not likely to cause a problem, but sometimes there are problems that occur in specific individuals, and sometimes there are problems that occur way later.
So let’s talk about that for just a moment. First of all, I believe the safest sunscreens are the ones that are made from zinc and probably better, regular zinc than nano zinc. The problem with nano particles is that they can get into the skin. The good thing about zinc is it’s a very important element in the body. Now titanium in the nano form theoretically could get into the skin and get next to the DNA energy to cause damage to the DNA, but that’s never been proven. ‘
So far titanium is likely to be safe, but zinc is likely to be safer. Now that is one component part of sunscreens and those are often called sun barriers or natural sunscreens. But remember, the sunscreens even containing zinc and titanium are actually dealing with the energy, it’s not like putting a total cover across your skin, like with clothing.
The other sunscreens that are used are compounds that absorb the energy from the sun and turn it to something less harmful. Many of those compounds are related to the sulfonamide. So if you have allergy to sulfur drugs, sunscreen could be a problem for you. If you had a reaction to other sunscreens, including PABA, you still could react to some of their new sunscreens because they are similar chemically. Finally, the sunscreens that contain these various compounds may have a little bit of what we call estrogen-like activity, and so for some people they could stimulate hormone receptors and could be dangerous.
Although these kinds of things are only found out years and years after use and exposure, I prefer to avoid these kind compounds if possible. The higher potency sunscreens will contain both the zinc and/or titanium and these compounds. Take a look carefully at your labels. If you have the opportunity, find a sunscreen that avoids those kinds of chemicals, but does contain antioxidant nutrients that will give you a little bit of extra end protection.
There are positive benefits to sun exposure as well as possible harm, including skin cancer, wrinkles, and aging. Being outside and getting the air and feeling the warmth of the sun on your body is a nice way to relax and the kind of meditation that allows you to feel better. A little bit of sunshine also helps the body make vitamin D and as long as you are not burning or getting in areas that we are going to get excessively aged, that could be very beneficial. Vitamin D made by the sun is something that helps stimulate your immune system and prevent auto-immune disorders.
Another benefit of the sun is that, it just makes me feel good. So you shouldn’t be scared of the sun, you should figure out how to get sun exposure and make yourself feel better by being outside and getting the air. You can consult with me for functional medicine skincare.
WHAT’S THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF EXPOSURE FOR YOU ~ RESTORATIVE DERMATOLOGY
There are people who argue that you should get no sun exposure at all. I’m not in that camp, as you can tell by my suntan. However, I do protect myself as much as I can when I am outside.
I am a Mediterranean skin type with brown eyes and I can deal with ten or fifteen or twenty minutes of sun exposure with no problem. If I get a lot more sun exposure, I’ll get red. It’s the beginning of the season when I haven’t been outside it all. I’ll get even a chance at burning my skin, so I’m very careful with that. Now if you have light skin, you’re one of those types from whose family descends from the northern climates, then you could probably take less sun than that.
If your skin is darker, you can deal with even more sun, and not have a burn or as much damage. Remember our skin makes vitamin D. So the places that are family descended from determines how much sun we need to get through in order to make enough vitamin D. I think it’s important that you understand how much it takes to give yourself a little bit of vitamin D production, which could be ten or fifteen minutes on the side as an average, for an average person, say a Mediterranean skin type and from that, gauge how much sun you get, but certainly well before the time where you would turn red.
“When you think about some of the patients you’ve treated over the years, are there any in particular that stand out as particularly remarkable?”
“Yeah there are, I can think of one patient who I have seen in my previous practice in Connecticut who came down to visit me and had a lump on his back and the lump was when I biopsied it was loaded with white blood cells now look like it was a lymphoma. Interestingly enough he had been exposed in his work to a very potent solvent for many years for over 20 year to a very potent solvent for many years for over 20 years as a typewriter repair man. It was a former trichloroethylene as I immediately suspected that there was a connection and I did some things such as gave him some different supplements that helped him remove that material from his body as well as giving him some supplements which have been known to be effective in various kinds of cancer. The next time he came back there was no lump to be found.”
“Have you noticed that you’ve treated people who have certain mental block or mental hang ups and give a talk to them about what those are and then when they resolve their skin conditions go away?”
“There are definitely people who I’ve use techniques on to release various kinds and anxieties and stresses in conflicts. One of those techniques is new modulation technique which involves tapping on acupuncture points along with a series of suggestions to release things. I had a patient with herpes aster which was I’m threatening to involve the eye and possibly even threatening to cause blindness because of its location on the nose. That patient didn’t want to take the medications that would have easily worked, so I used this technique and the next phone call I got was it’s all better so that was a great relief for me as well as for her. I’m there are a number of other techniques and I had the privilege in the past six months of meeting John Sarno who does a lot of work with psychosomatic issues where they are or hidden underlying problems leading to the cause disorders in some of my work is leading people to that kind of release.”
“Tell us Dr. Dattner, what are some of the supplements that you find work well for some your patience?”
“Well I use digestive enzymes I use herbs that support the liver in a variety of different ways and let me also emphasize that I make choices according to the individual patient. Now it might be that the person wants a vegetarian enzymes so that makes me make certain kinds of other choices, but I’ve also been fortunate to have learned a method for determining which of two different products a would be ideal by using muscle response testing and I’m able to test muscles that are directly related segmentally to the organ involved to see which one strengthens up that muscle related to the organ. I use that as an additional guide for finding out which things would be best among two things which intellectually makes sense as being useful from my understanding of the disorder that I am treating.”
