WHAT TO DO IN YOUR 20’S TO SAVE YOUR SKIN IN YOUR 50’s

There are a lot of people who would like to get a tan when they’re young to make themselves look more attractive and look more like outdoor people. Now, that makes some sense if your whole life is outdoors but the problem with it is that the damage done begins to appear later in life and it accumulates. What you want to do is try to avoid sunburns at all costs and make sure that if you do get a little bit of sun that you protect the areas that show most.
This is a little bit different than what most people do because most women especially will get a nice tan on their ” V” neck area. You’ll notice that there are many women who continue getting that tan and by the time they hit their forties or fifties that area looks beat up with blotches and sunspots and redness and all kinds of damage. Whereas, there are other women who just get very light amount of sun and not have that damage. So you want to avoid that kind of damage to the exposed areas.
The best thing to do for sunburn is not to get one. Avoid sunburn to keep skin from aging, fend off wrinkles, and prevent skin cancers like melanoma and basic cell carcinoma. But here are some tips on natural sunburn care
Of course, protecting your skin and carrying some protective clothing on a cloudy day when you are expect to be out all day is a very good idea to protect herself.
But if you do get the sunburn, then the most important thing to do is first cover yourself up so you don’t get any more further damage. If fact it’s a good idea to check yourself if you’re outside a lot, periodically to see if you’re burning because you may be so busy and so active whether in the water or the wind and not noticing it. You want to catch it before you start turning red.
Now, if you do get a sunburn, the important thing is to see how bad it is. If it’s just redness and not blistering, sometimes things like a solution of Aspirincan actually calm down the readiness.
Also, topical and oral antioxidants can both protect you and also help calm down the sun damage, that means things like vitamin C, vitamin E, N acetyl cysteine and glycolic acid. Those are all things that can calm sunburn down.
Natural sources of antioxidants include the inside of the citrus fruits, the white part and the pulp and also the extracts from grape seed, like the proanthocyanidins that are so protective as antioxidants. So taking those may give you a little bit of a benefit if you had too much so sun.
Most sunscreens have been tested and they are not likely to cause a problem, but sometimes there are problems that occur in specific individuals, and sometimes there are problems that occur way later.
So let’s talk about that for just a moment. First of all, I believe the safest sunscreens are the ones that are made from zinc and probably better, regular zinc than nano zinc. The problem with nano particles is that they can get into the skin. The good thing about zinc is it’s a very important element in the body. Now titanium in the nano form theoretically could get into the skin and get next to the DNA energy to cause damage to the DNA, but that’s never been proven. ‘
So far titanium is likely to be safe, but zinc is likely to be safer. Now that is one component part of sunscreens and those are often called sun barriers or natural sunscreens. But remember, the sunscreens even containing zinc and titanium are actually dealing with the energy, it’s not like putting a total cover across your skin, like with clothing.
The other sunscreens that are used are compounds that absorb the energy from the sun and turn it to something less harmful. Many of those compounds are related to the sulfonamide. So if you have allergy to sulfur drugs, sunscreen could be a problem for you. If you had a reaction to other sunscreens, including PABA, you still could react to some of their new sunscreens because they are similar chemically. Finally, the sunscreens that contain these various compounds may have a little bit of what we call estrogen-like activity, and so for some people they could stimulate hormone receptors and could be dangerous.
Although these kinds of things are only found out years and years after use and exposure, I prefer to avoid these kind compounds if possible. The higher potency sunscreens will contain both the zinc and/or titanium and these compounds. Take a look carefully at your labels. If you have the opportunity, find a sunscreen that avoids those kinds of chemicals, but does contain antioxidant nutrients that will give you a little bit of extra end protection.
Watermelon has wonderful properties for a natural skincare diet. The the green part of watermelon has a diuretic effect, that is, it helps the body get rid of liquid. Watermelon is also an alkalizing food. So even though it’s sweet, it helps make the body more alkaline. The caution watermelon that it is very sweet, and there’s a lot of sugar there. So you’ve got to be sure you’re not eating an excess amount sugar, or that you don’t have a problem with sugar, when you’re eating watermelon.
There are positive benefits to sun exposure as well as possible harm, including skin cancer, wrinkles, and aging. Being outside and getting the air and feeling the warmth of the sun on your body is a nice way to relax and the kind of meditation that allows you to feel better. A little bit of sunshine also helps the body make vitamin D and as long as you are not burning or getting in areas that we are going to get excessively aged, that could be very beneficial. Vitamin D made by the sun is something that helps stimulate your immune system and prevent auto-immune disorders.
Another benefit of the sun is that, it just makes me feel good. So you shouldn’t be scared of the sun, you should figure out how to get sun exposure and make yourself feel better by being outside and getting the air. You can consult with me for functional medicine skincare.
Avocados are a great food for your skin, because they contain a lot of oils that are beneficial to your body. But there is a caution with avocados because they also are histamine-producing foods. And so if you have a condition of hives or severe itching that’s allergic, it may be best to cut back on the avocados and avoid them. So it’s imoprtant to know that when you’re choosing your foods. I think it’s always important to know that there are foods in general, but specifically for you there may be differences. So we have a wonderful food here in avocados, but it may not be good if your skin condition involves a lot of histamine release.
Blueberries are a terrific food, and the reason they’re so terrific is because the purple color they have is a dye that contains something which has powerful antioxidant activity. The actual ingredient are called antho-cyanidins. They are pigments that help absorb free-radicals and protect the body.
But let’s talk about the other side of blueberries. If you are a person who has issues with sugar or with yeast, blueberries, especially nice fresh ones in-season can be very sweet. And they can aggravate your condition. So, they have to be chosen according to your situation. If you are overweight, or if you have excessive yeast issues, you might want to skip the blueberries. If you don’t have a problem in those arenas, and you have a lot of oxidant stress, blueberries are a terrific food, and should be eaten when they are in season.
Cucumber is very cooling, so from the Ayruvedic standpoint, it’s wonderful for people who have a lot of heat, for the what we call the “pitta” types. And it can be used both topically as a preparation for people who have a lot of heat, or it can be eaten in salads. So it’s a wonderful thing to eat in the summer when it’s hot.
Grapefruit can be an excellent food for the skin. Vitamin C is present in the fruit. And in the pulp, the white part inside the skin, there are bioflavonoids that protect against oxidative damage, which is occurring all the time, because when we detoxify with our liver, we produce free radicals, when we use muscles for activity, we produce free radicals. So we’re producing free radicals all the time. So it’s important to have a diet that helps support our ability to deal with free radical damage. And grapefruit is a good food for that.
However, a caution with grapefruit is that it affects some of our metabolic enzymes, especially in the liver, that break down different foods, and can slow those down. So, there are dozens of commonly used drugs whose metabolism is slowed down if you use grapefruit. Usually your doctor will warn you if you’re on such a drug, but it’s important to look up, because that could cause the drug levels to elevate because you don’t break the drug down as rapidly as you want, and that could cause some trouble. those are especially drugs that are broken down by the enzyme P450-3A4. So be sure to check if you’re taking any kind of medications and you want to eat grapefruit regularly.

Interviewer: So how do you look at skin disease differently from your colleagues in dermatology? How is holistic dermatology different?
Dr. Dattner: Well if you pick up a text book in dermatology, you look at it and then you read about this disorder and they say this might be related to kicks, it might be related to this, but we don’t know the answer.
Dr. Dattner: Well, that’s what got me asking. I want to know the answer, what’s causing it and when I finished my work at the dermatology branch, we had done work on what was known as a immune recognition. How the white cells, not the antibodies but the white cells see one thing and have it look like another. They see this flower and say, “oh, that looks like that one,” and if they are sensitive to this, they attack the other one.
Dr. Dattner: And that turns out to be an equation that requires not only the flower, but the hand that’s holding the flower if you will.
Dr. Dattner: It’s the transplantation antigens and we show that and actually later two people won Nobel prizes on work related to that.
Interviewer: Wow, for that research, that’s terrific.
Dr. Dattner: So that made me understand that we are very unique equations that went on. So it wasn’t one like the corn caused eczema. It was corn in a certain persons’ system that would cause a crust reaction to their own skin and maybe even at certain times. So I began to see that these kinds of things really existed and it let me know that the kinds of things I was hearing from the alternative world made sense.
Interviewer: So would you have that allergy and I don’t….
Dr. Dattner: Right, exactly.
Interviewer: Suppose that’s sometimes, it’s like let’s find out why this guy has it and this guy doesn’t.
Dr. Dattner: Yeah and it’s because of this additional piece for the recognition plus the exposure. There are a lot of different variables and a lot of this had gotten thrown out because they said that well if X amount is caused by corn then all eczema should be cause by corn but it isn’t and not even in the same individual. So they threw out the food thing because it didn’t make sense. It’s only with this new perspective that it makes sense. So as I saw that and as I began to do it I began to find solutions for people who hadn’t found solutions before and I became very excited, not just that I wanted to help those people, but I wanted to bring this knowledge into medicine. Not just for skin because of course it’s important for skin but for inflammation in general.
