Is Junk Food Addictive… on Purpose?

6a00e55255b462883401901b96b2cd970b-320wiAn article came out in the New York Times recently titled The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food, by Michael Moss. The article is about a book that discusses the systematic addiction to unhealthy “foods” in the past couple of decades.

An interesting part of this is that this technology was originally created for a good purpose; in order to get our troops to eat the food that they were given. Food that had to survive in war zones. Non-perishable food. The same technology, however, has since been applied to testing and developing snack foods for the express purpose of addicting people to these foods.

Junk foods contain elevated amounts of high-temperature heated fats and oils, salt, sugar, and other chemicals that we now know are really bad for our health. It’s most interesting that food industry has, starting with a good purpose, evolved to producing foods that are generally harmful for the population.

Even more interesting is the fact that these companies are operating not only according to the law, but are obligated legally to produce the maximum income for their wealthy shareholders, but with very little legal responsibility to the actual people eating the food, which is marketed especially to children and to people of lower socio-economic status. So, we have created a completely legal monster in society that satisfies our deepest food cravings and also our financial cravings.

Unfortunately, the effects of these foods are leading our entire nation to poor house because we can no longer afford the cost of so much diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other junk food-related illness. Not to mention skin diseases like acne. Because of this, we’ve created an amazingly “free” society, which has essentially set itself up to self-desctruct.

No longer simply a physical disease, this is also a social and cultural disease, and the solution lies in us educating one another as well as finding pleasure in foods that make us feel great and not just taste good for a few moments.

What if this same technology were applied to make healthy foods more appealing?

Dairy and Acne. A connection?

6a00e55255b4628834017d432086eb970c-200wiBack when I started my dermatology training, there were still a number of older dermatologists who had trained before the era of widespread use of antibiotics, who told their acne patients to stop drinking milk to improve their acne condition.
That advice became unpopular for about 30 years, with the easy use of tetracycline to calm acne and avoid the issue.

But during the past decade, a study on nurses and then two subsequent studies on their sons and daughters (published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology 2005-8,) demonstrated a definite association between drinking milk, and especially skim milk, and acne occurrence.
The fact that skim milk had a greater association suggested that it was not the fats, but possibly the hormones in milk, which were causing the problem.  Milk contains hormones like progesterone, because 80% of the cows producing milk have recently been pregnant.

But milk also possesses a number of androgen-related hormones that go on to influence the sebaceous gland unit to form an acne lesion. Dr. William Danby, who was involved with these studies and lectured on this subject at the recent American Academy of Dermatology meeting, pointed out that the androgens in cows’ milk cause acne, but are different than human androgens.

As a result, the production of the body’s own androgens are not turned off by their presence, as in a normal feedback loop situation.  That would be like having another heater in your house not wired to the regular thermostat, and wondering why it was getting so hot.  So cow’s milk androgens turn up the male hormone activity that is driving the acne.  I will discuss other ways milk may aggravate acne in future blog.
Do your own dairy experiment by cutting it out of your diet completely and see if it has any effect…

Curing Acne Naturally – My Article in Delicious Living Magazine

6a00e55255b462883401901b96b474970b-320wiI am seeing more and more people who are tired of the experienced and possible side effects of the medications that have been required to treat their acne, and want to get to the bottom of the issue and treat the causes. They are seeking a more natural treatment, and have often been motivated to take bold steps like giving up sugar and other foods they suspect are contributing to their breakouts.

It is gratifying to see that some people have even started taking various herbs and supplements useful in controlling acne.

Unfortunately, most of them achieve only limited success. They have not put together a program that successfully integrates not only the general aspects of physiologic dysfunction associated with acne, but with the specifics of their own pathway to that disorder. And often, the supplements chosen do not have the maximum effectiveness for the category of disorder they are intended to correct. They are very happy for me to put together a tailored program for them.

If my methods interest you, you will appreciate the article that quotes me called “Natural Treatment of Acne” in January 2013 (page 55-6) in Delicious Living magazine that discusses some of the methods I, and other dermatologists use to control acne naturally.

10 Things to Eat for Perfect Skin

Check out a copy of Prevention Magazine this month; I’m quoted in the current November 2012 issue of

6a00e55255b4628834017d431fd40f970c-200wiPrevention
, in their article, 10 Things to Eat for Perfect Skin.

I discuss the relationship between eating sugar and the accelerated breakdown of the collagen and elastin in the skin, leading to wrinkles. Sugar binds to proteins in the skin forming Advanced Glycation Endproducts (or AGE’s). These AGE’s stimulate enzymes that chew up to collagen and elastin, leading to sagging skin. Check out the article for the full story. (Prevention, Nov 2012, p 52)

Spiritual Health, Part 1

6a00e55255b4628834017eea9438e1970d-320wiScience is an important foundation of our understanding of the truth. Through science, we understand the “how” and some of the “why” of medicine and healing. Yet, there are other foundation stones that are also important. For example, many cultures have created valuable forms of science and medicine (in this case, by “science” I mean methodical study). Asian cultures created incredibly precise and methodical forms of medicine like acupuncture and ayruveda, through a completely different set of cultural understandings.

Our western version of science should never be our only guiding light, because the application, emphasis, and direction of science depends on the level of intentions of those who apply it.

Also, science is a constant rapid expansion; each year, we are tracking and studying smaller and smaller events–every seven years, we have an entirely new palate of factors we use to direct our studies. Western science is beginning to “catch up” to Asian philosophies in the past decade, in the way that we have begun to move from thinking in terms of chains of events to interactive symphonies of factors. Our leading mathematics of understanding, now explores probabilities rather than direct proof of cause.

Probiotics and… Ahem, Diarrhea

6a00e55255b4628834017eea943b50970d-200wiFor nearly 3 decades, my colleagues in the world of Integrative Medicine and Holistic medicine have been warning about the consequences of excessive antibiotic use, calling for the use of more probiotics and other measures to prevent the consequences of antibiotic use in the digestive system, including yeast overgrowth.

Protocols suggested include probiotics as the foundation for treatment of gut issues. Use of probiotics by physicians for problems associated with antibiotics goes back much further than our three decades, but during the recent 30 years or so, probiotics use seems to have been forgotten by the majority of doctors practicing in this country.

The traditional medical establishment seems to have rediscovered probiotics an article printed in JAMA (The Journal of the American Medical Association)–at least for the condition of diarrhea, which would be a more obvious manifestation of antibiotic overgrowth of yeast and other resistant organisms.

I welcome this study in a popular journal, even though it lacks a prominent mention of the possible relationship to yeast overgrowth from antibiotic use and the other synergistic measures that would help with this problem. Perhaps someday, integrative physicians like myself will be recognized as clinical pioneers than as quacks. And to the authors of the article who have recently explored this treatment, I must add, “You don’t say; what a surprise!”

I’ve included the abstract from the study below.

How Electricity Can Hurt or Heal Your Skin, Part 3

6a00e55255b4628834017d431fe747970c-320wiOther electrical devices have been made which record the body’s energetic responses to various frequencies. For example, the Asyra, is the tenth and latest device built by G Tech, and the culmination of 35 years of experience in this field. It beams frequencies which are energetically related to different specific issues (such as chemical toxins, allergies, digestion, heavy metals.)

The person being tested holds a brass electrode in each hand, and the device registers changes which are recorded by the Asyra. It then automatically selects remedies for any failed tests. It helps correct the energetic imbalances underlying various chemical imbalances, placing an electronic “signature” on a drainage remedy or solution.
I am actively using the Asyra to assess such functional energetic changes which may help restore balance to individuals who I see in my practice. This extends my functional evaluation to assessing and treating the energetic imbalances underlying.
If you are interested in having work done with the Asyra, please contact my office to set up an appointment. The Asyra can also be used remotely, in the case that you’re not near New York.
As you may imagine, if helpful subtle energy fields can affect the body in a healing way, there is a possibility that other energy fields can aggravate and interfere with biochemical processes in the body. Cell phones, microwave transmitters and towers, radio and television waves, computers, high voltage power lines and equipment, wireless networks, are just some of the new exposures people are exposed to for the benefits they bring. Only by observing carefully will we be able to identify if any of these exposures are causing any harm.

How Electricity Can Hurt or Heal Your Skin, Part 2

6a00e55255b46288340167668d21f0970b-200wiIn Part 1 of this series, I talked about how many kinds of electric devices including mobile phones and wi-fi might be disturbing the important subtle electronic and chemical processes of the body. However, there are new electronic devices that can also help repair these processes.
Electronic medical devices that give off pulsed electrical frequencies have been studied to determine which frequencies activates which enzymes in the process of skin repair. Recent scientific studies of a medical device sending a pulsed electromagnetic field of a particular frequency, have shown several beneficial effects, including increasing the healing wound-strength by 58%.
A device is already being sold commercially to speed wound healing after plastic surgery, using that same frequency. This is exciting news, and in the next part of this series, I’ll share with you an even more exciting set of electronic medical devices that can benefit the skin.

How Electricity Can Hurt or Heal Your Skin, Part 1

6a00e55255b462883401901b9744cb970b-200wiWe go about our day using a variety of electronic devices which intercept and send packets of information in the form of energy at various frequencies and power levels, making up what we know as radio, Television, mobile phone, and wi-fi signals. All are composed of specific wavelengths of energy, varied in a sequence to produce what we hear as voice and see as pictures on our screen, etc.

The term “energy” essentially refers to an unseen force or packet of information, and has been used a lot in the fields of medicine and healing recently.

Dr. Robert O. Becker, a researcher and Orthopedic surgeon, who wrote “The Body Electric” and other works on the effects of electric currents on bone healing and other events in the body. He, like others today, was concerned about the effects of strong electric fields on the body.

At the molecular level, smaller than cells, our bodies function with an enormous series of perfectly-timed chemical reactions. Each of the attractions and repulsions and chemical transformations require electrical forces and the addition or release of specific electrical or other forms of energy. And those biological processes occur in a given sequence, so that there are specific patterns with specific types of chemicals. If you could watch these reactions with tiny meters, you could measure these reactions.Electronic medical devices that give off pulsed electrical frequencies have been studied to determine which frequencies activates which enzymes in the process of skin repair. Recent scientific studies of a medical device sending a pulsed electromagnetic field of a particular frequency, have shown several beneficial effects, including increasing the healing wound-strength by 58%. A device is already being sold commercially to speed wound healing after plastic surgery, using that same frequency.

Stay tuned for parts two and three.
