Blueberries: Great Food for Your Skin ~ Best Natural Skincare Diet

Blueberries are a terrific food, and the reason they’re so terrific is because the purple color they have is a dye that contains something which has powerful antioxidant activity. The actual ingredient are called antho-cyanidins. They are pigments that help absorb free-radicals and protect the body.

But let’s talk about the other side of blueberries. If you are a person who has issues with sugar or with yeast, blueberries, especially nice fresh ones in-season can be very sweet. And they can aggravate your condition. So, they have to be chosen according to your situation. If you are overweight, or if you have excessive yeast issues, you might want to skip the blueberries. If you don’t have a problem in those arenas, and you have a lot of oxidant stress, blueberries are a terrific food, and should be eaten when they are in season.

What is Holistic Dermatology, Really?

What is Holistic Dermatology, Really? Healthy Frontiers

Interviewer:   It’s great. So what is a Holistic Dermatologist? Now we can go on forever…

Dr. Dattner:   Okay, there are a couple of things that are involved in Holistic Dermatology. One, is I am a dermatologist, so I understand the methods that are available and what the positives and negatives are.  I understand the biology and physiology of the skin, so I bring that to the table and at the same time I have other methods to use to get back to the etiology, to the root cause of the problem that’s going on. And the root cause is usually an environmental exposure, whether it’s something topical in which my colleagues are very good at diagnosing when if it’s a context sensitivity. But, the biggest source of foreign material entering the body is through the mouth, so the digestive tract is what I spend a lot of time correcting. Microbial, the digestion, leaky gut all of those things are things that I address in my practice. The other thing is that Holistic Dermatology covers a wide variety of inputs, so some people have an emotional issue which leads to an eating issue which leads to gut issue which leads to a skin issue. So when it becomes obvious that there is a particular area that needs treatment, I address that area.

Interviewer:   Right!

Dr. Dattner:   The other thing is that it’s very eclectic, so I use a number of different techniques that are not in conventional medicine. Those include herbology, those include some chiropractic techniques, some kinesiology to give me further information that corresponds with what I have learned from history and physical as well and helps me better select among the things that intellectually should make sense for say treating, but digestive issues I can refine that.

Interviewer:   That’s great; so why did you choose to practice that way?

Dr. Dattner:   Well, you know I got to the tip of the tip in terms of practice of dermatology and I saw what was known and what wasn’t known. The tip of the tip this was the National Institute of Health, building ten, where we flew patients in who we wanted to study from all over the country.

Interviewer:   Yes

Dr. Dattner:   And we had patients there who had rare disorders that were being treated with Vitamin C, but there was not an understanding of the lure around Vitamin C and bioflavonoids.

Interviewer:   Right

Dr. Dattner:   And I realize I had to go outside of current conventional medicine to bring in the totality of knowledge that was available and so it was very exciting when I found out that all this was available through the….what was called the alternative world then. But interestingly in this particular case with the Vitamin C, the work on bioflavonoids had been done in the 50’s by a Nobel Prize winner. So it had just left medicine for a while.

Interviewer:   Right, forgotten.

Dr. Dattner:   Wasn’t that it was never in it.

Interviewer:   Right, okay should have it was always there.

Dr. Dattner:   Yeah!

Interviewer:   Good!

Cucumber: Great Food for Your Skin ~ Best Natural Skincare Diet

Cucumber is very cooling, so from the Ayruvedic standpoint, it’s wonderful for people who have a lot of heat, for the what we call the “pitta” types. And it can be used both topically as a preparation for people who have a lot of heat, or it can be eaten in salads. So it’s a wonderful thing to eat in the summer when it’s hot.

Grapefruit: Great Food for Your Skin ~ Best Natural Skincare Diet

Grapefruit can be an excellent food for the skin. Vitamin C is present in the fruit. And in the pulp, the white part inside the skin, there are bioflavonoids that protect against oxidative damage, which is occurring all the time, because when we detoxify with our liver, we produce free radicals, when we use muscles for activity, we produce free radicals. So we’re producing free radicals all the time. So it’s important to have a diet that helps support our ability to deal with free radical damage. And grapefruit is a good food for that.

However, a caution with grapefruit is that it affects some of our metabolic enzymes, especially in the liver, that break down different foods, and can slow those down. So, there are dozens of commonly used drugs whose metabolism is slowed down if you use grapefruit. Usually your doctor will warn you if you’re on such a drug, but it’s important to look up, because that could cause the drug levels to elevate because you don’t break the drug down as rapidly as you want, and that could cause some trouble. those are especially drugs that are broken down by the enzyme P450-3A4. So be sure to check if you’re taking any kind of medications and you want to eat grapefruit regularly.

How is Holistic Dermatology Different from Conventional Dermatology? ~ Healthy Frontiers

How is Holistic Dermatology Different from Conventional Dermatology ~ Healthy Frontiers

Interviewer:   So how do you look at skin disease differently from your colleagues in dermatology? How is holistic dermatology different?

Dr. Dattner:   Well if you pick up a text book in dermatology, you look at it and then you read about this disorder and they say this might be related to kicks, it might be related to this, but we don’t know the answer.

Interviewer:   Right.

Dr. Dattner:   Well, that’s what got me asking. I want to know the answer, what’s causing it and when I finished my work at the dermatology branch, we had done work on what was known as a immune recognition. How the white cells, not the antibodies but the white cells see one thing and have it look like another. They see this flower and say, “oh, that looks like that one,” and if they are sensitive to this, they attack the other one.

Interviewer:  Yeah

Dr. Dattner:   And that turns out to be an equation that requires not only the flower, but the hand that’s holding the flower if you will.

Interviewer:   Sure

Dr. Dattner:   It’s the transplantation antigens and we show that and actually later two people won Nobel prizes on work related to that.

Interviewer:   Wow, for that research, that’s terrific.

Dr. Dattner:   So that made me understand that we are very unique equations that went on. So it wasn’t one like the corn caused eczema. It was corn in a certain persons’ system that would cause a crust reaction to their own skin and maybe even at certain times. So I began to see that these kinds of things really existed and it let me know that the kinds of things I was hearing from the alternative world made sense.

Interviewer:   So would you have that allergy and I don’t….

Dr. Dattner:   Right, exactly.

Interviewer:   Suppose that’s sometimes, it’s like let’s find out why this guy has it and this guy doesn’t.

Dr. Dattner:   Yeah and it’s because of this additional piece for the recognition plus the exposure. There are a lot of different variables and a lot of this had gotten thrown out because they said that well if X amount is caused by corn then all eczema should be cause by corn but it isn’t and not even in the same individual. So they threw out the food thing because it didn’t make sense. It’s only with this new perspective that it makes sense. So as I saw that and as I began to do it I began to find solutions for people who hadn’t found solutions before and I became very excited, not just that I wanted to help those people, but I wanted to bring this knowledge into medicine. Not just for skin because of course it’s important for skin but for inflammation in general.

Interviewer:   Sure, makes so much sense.

Why am I Gaining Weight? Natural treatments for fat?

Why am I Gaining Weight? Natural treatments for fat?

A frequent complain that I hear from people is, why am I gaining weight? Can you make it stop? They’ve told me that they’ve tried everything. They’ve tried diets and this and that. They’ve tried cutting down on fats. But often they’ve not cut down sufficiently on sugar and carbohydrates.

There are two things that sugar can do. They can be used to cause fats to become chain elongated as we say technically. And it also can cause accumulation of more fats. But even more than that it can affect the organisms living in our digestive system. And that can contribute to the growth of more fat cells in the body and an addition of weight. So we really have to change the kind of organisms living in the body as well as reduce the calories coming in.

Of course it’s important to put out more calories too so that exercise is critical. Exercise not only burns up calories while you are doing it, but it increases the metabolisms of your muscles and your body so that you burn more fats while you are sleeping and during the rest of the day as well. Another thing that has to be done is to cut down on inflammation, which aggravates the whole system that regulates how much fat we store. When we are inflamed the body is on alert and it stores more fat in case.

So we have to cut down on inflammation, various sources whether it be from food allergy or from chronic infections. Or even just from chronic exhaustion and sleep deprivation. So we want to cut back and normalize the lifestyle so that everything begins to work more naturally. And that helps us cut down on weight.

Dr. Dattner:   Well anybody with a skin disorder is going to benefit, if they are interested in finding other ways of solving the problem.

Interviewer:   Right

Dr. Dattner:   Or of getting better control in using something in addition to what their dermatologist is giving them.

Interviewer:   Right

Dr. Dattner:   And people who are going to benefit most are the ones also who want to use natural methods and are willing to make the changes necessary to do that.
