Natural Skin Care Success Stories

“When you think about some of the patients you’ve treated over the years, are there any in particular that stand out as particularly remarkable?”

“Yeah there are, I can think of one patient who I have seen in my previous practice in Connecticut who came down to visit me and had a lump on his back and the lump was when I biopsied it was loaded with white blood cells now look like it was a lymphoma. Interestingly enough he had been exposed in his work to a very potent solvent for many years for over 20 year to a very potent solvent for many years for over 20 years as a typewriter repair man. It was a former trichloroethylene as I immediately suspected that there was a connection and I did some things such as gave him some different supplements that helped him remove that material from his body as well as giving him some supplements which have been known to be effective in various kinds of cancer. The next time he came back there was no lump to be found.”

“Wow!”
“Have you noticed that you’ve treated people who have certain mental block or mental hang ups and give a talk to them about what those are and then when they resolve their skin conditions go away?”

“There are definitely people who I’ve use techniques on to release various kinds and anxieties and stresses in conflicts. One of those techniques is new modulation technique which involves tapping on acupuncture points along with a series of suggestions to release things. I had a patient with herpes aster which was I’m threatening to involve the eye and possibly even threatening to cause blindness because of its location on the nose. That patient didn’t want to take the medications that would have easily worked, so I used this technique and the next phone call I got was it’s all better so that was a great relief for me as well as for her. I’m there are a number of other techniques and I had the privilege in the past six months of meeting John Sarno who does a lot of work with psychosomatic issues where they are or hidden underlying problems leading to the cause disorders in some of my work is leading people to that kind of release.”

Holistic Dermatology, Ann Wigmore, Wheat Grass, Vegetarian Anti-Cancer Diet

“What can you tell me about the effective wheatgrass juice?”

“Well wheatgrass juices has a lot of anti-oxidants in it. It’s reported to have a lot of beneficial effects even in conditions such as diabetes and in cancer. I had the privilege of meeting Ann Wigmore in Cambridge in around 1970. She was still alive and there were a lot of very devoted people who were coming to her for help. I didn’t have a chance to really go through a lot of case histories in ascertain exactly what was going on but I had a very strong sense that people were getting better from the stories that were told to me.”

“Now do they apply wheat grass topically or is it mainly internal?”

“People were using it internally and it was part of a very rigorous program that was vegetarian in yet still had methods for obtaining important nutrients like B-12 with the Rejuvelac. She had a very extensive program so it wasn’t just that you took some wheat grass you were used they were eating watermelon rinds for Diuretic and watermelon. It was they had many different steps that were put together in order to be vegetarian and yet still do cleansing and yet still be healthy having the essential nutrients.”

Is Detoxification Necessary for Healthy Skin?

“Is detoxification a very important process with patients of yours?”

“That does have an important role in a lot of ways but I must say that the word as to physicians is kind of a red flag they see detoxification is bizarre because they’re not really saying what are you de toxic about, but when you really look carefully at the medical literature you see that there are a lot of different kinds toxicity that exist me from heavy metal toxicity to inability of the livers P 450 system for preparing altering bio transforming in getting rid of different substances that we take in like medications and in other chemicals. Toxins are real it’s just a word that is highly reactive word to my colleagues.”

What Natural Skin Care Supplements Do You Prescribe?

“Tell us Dr. Dattner, what are some of the supplements that you find work well for some your patience?”

“Well I use digestive enzymes I use herbs that support the liver in a variety of different ways and let me also emphasize that I make choices according to the individual patient. Now it might be that the person wants a vegetarian enzymes so that makes me make certain kinds of other choices, but I’ve also been fortunate to have learned a method for determining which of two different products a would be ideal by using muscle response testing and I’m able to test muscles that are directly related segmentally to the organ involved to see which one strengthens up that muscle related to the organ. I use that as an additional guide for finding out which things would be best among two things which intellectually makes sense as being useful from my understanding of the disorder that I am treating.”

“Wow that is fascinating!”

“It’s very helpful, and you know it’s still a little surprising being a scientist its been a big leap of faith for me to learn this, but having study with a number of masters who do this. I have gotten a sense of doing it just like when you go to an acupuncturist and they feel your pulse he gets a sense of something and it’s very hard to communicate in words.”

Holistic Dermatology and Natural Skin Care: What is it?

“I want to introduce my guest today Dr. Allan Dattner. Thank you for being on the show today.”

“Thank you, I’m glad to be here.”

“As I said in the beginning you are in a fascinating field because there are dermatologist in the world who practice medicine a certain way they’ve been schooled in traditional methods allopathic methods and that leads to certain results and you have come along and you’ve said I want to do something a little different.”

“That’s correct”

“You have a holistic approach which I am very much in alignment with. What I’d like you to do is tell us about your background by how this all started for you. You were in college you became a doctor and what happened after that?”

“Well actually it started while I was in college. I started working at a little laboratory in Rye called Sloan-Kettering and a in a field called tumor immunology which was only occupying one room there. It’s grown logarithmically sense, but that got me very interested in the field lymph. I continue their studies on and off throughout my medical school in afterwards and during my during my fellowship to my residency in finally afterwards at the National Institute of Health the National Cancer Institute in the dermatology Branch. In our work there demonstrated nature in the recognition of the lymphocyte between different kinds of substances. We call it cross-reactive recognition. It was that understanding cross-reactive recognition the let me understand how diet could actually change what the body’s immune system was recognized. How that might pertain to different substances in one’s food causing inflammation or contributing to inflammation. That strengthen my pursuit of the pathway of diet and disease in the skin.”

“Dr. Dattner, so how many years ago was this that you’re talking about? “

“Well that was in the late seventies in 1976 I went to the NIH I left Pelham where I was living. Packed up my belongings and wife where we went down to Maryland. There I worked as a visiting scientist for almost three years.”

“Okay and so that was a long time ago. You must be honor as one of the pioneers in this field.”

“Yes I believe I’m one of the early pioneers, perhaps one of the people who started this field. You probably see my website holisticdermatology.com is number one on Google for that. Probably, because I started so many years ago before other people that into it. After I left there I was hoping to do some studies on nutrition and the immune response, but it was a very difficult thing to find people with the imagination to do that at that time and the funding. So I well and up joining a clinic in Putnam Connecticut connected with the Yoga Institute that was very much oriented towards vegetarianism, supplements and nutritional therapies. From there I just kept on learning and kept on building. I was part of us a small seminal group physicians throughout the Northeast who met and influence speakers several times a year. Discussing topics in this area and over period seventeen years got to learn a lot and meet a lot of people who also were key people in coming forth with new ideas and help put these things together. I must emphasize that although some of the information came from holistic medicine in from the periphery and from traditional techniques. A lot of it really was based on good hard science that news just being interpreted in highlighted in a different way than most to my colleagues highlighted that science.”

“What have you been noticing over the years?”

“I’ve been noticing over the years that the things that I’ve been excited about take 10 to 20 years before they catch on and then they catch on really big. For instance I would be getting up a meetings at scientific meetings and saying why don’t we put some vitamin E in vitamin C in into these immunodeficient mice that are being exposed to light or radiation in C with a dozen people would poo-poo me and try to shut me up. Well I went on with it like this for years and then the whole cosmetically industry started about ten or fifteen years ago using the kinds of things that I was talking about. I’ve been seeing so many the things that have been predicting coming into fruition that now I’m beginning to say it’s time for me to bring a few of the things that I’ve been thinking about that have been already been taken into account into fruition.”

Natural Skin Care Challenges the Normal American Diet

“It comes down to them total environmental causes and how the cultural specific things that we’re doing. That we don’t see because we are like in a fishbowl we say oh that’s you know. I’m on a normal diet normal American day, but did you know no American diet includes 140 pounds of sugar per person per year! That really year is something that they are species didn’t grow up with. You had to work awfully hard 150 years ago to find a hundred pounds or 150 pounds sugar to eat. We are in a situation it’s very different we call it normal. I look at many of those kinds of things make shifts in them and watch the benefits that it that occur and people who work with me have that kind of benefit.”

“I would imagine that many patients want instant gratification and they probably get that when they go to a traditional dermatologist. I would imagine your methods take a lot of time is that correct?”

“They take more time the effect is not as instant as a shot of steroids in the arm where things calm down right away but many people do experience a calming down occurring you know within the days and weeks after they have start the program. The nice thing is it doesn’t go away when they start putting something on their skin.”

What’s the Difference Between a Regular/Holistic Dermatologist?

“I would imagine you get patients who come to you with all kinds of different skin conditions and I would imagine if they went to a traditional dermatologists they would have one kind of treatment and yet you have different kinds of treatment difference between what a regular dermatologist would do and what you do?”

“Well there’s a whole series have different treatments the dermatologists have developed and I learned though they work very well yeah, but they have a certain cost to them because many of them are treating symptoms. For instance the cortisone steroids to calm down the information, but they don’t always get at the cause of the information. If the cause of the information is a dietary habits were is contribute too a heavily dietary habits putting the cortisone on will give you a 1-4 relief so when you stop putting it the problem comes back and unless you correct the underlying cause you still have a problem. I treat a lot of conditions they have inflammation by working my way back towards the underlying causes getting the digestive system working better. Figuring out which things are are causing getting the liver to help detoxify better using anti-inflammatory herbs. I’m able to avoid a lot of the drugs my colleagues need to use on a daily basis in acne people use a lot of antibiotics dermatologists for treating and acne treatment with antibiotics has its cost because people then sometimes get overgrowth used in the intestinal tract. Then they can get even in the worst cases chronic fatigue and they can function. I work with the processes information calming that information through changes in the digestive tract and working on the hormonal basis that the acne using a variety of supplements gently shift how the hormones working in a safer way, because some other side effects and the the supplements amusing or reducing the the the statistical chances breast cancer so I like positive side-effect.

I like it when the patient is treated for their skin and their energy is better and they have more verve during the day and get more done and enjoy life more that’s the kinda side-effect I like to see. I really enjoy working with people who have improvements in their overall health while we’re improving their skin. That’s very different than what many of my colleagues do.”

What Eczema and Allergy Tell Us about the Earth’s Skin

“So this skin is really an indicate of what’s going on in the world Dr. Dattner? “

“The wonderful thing about the skin is that it reflects what’s going on in the skin of the earth. There’s something that’s really prevalent in the environment that wasn’t there before, that our system can deal with. We react to it .now when we pushing to some area of the woods where we weren’t before may break out with poison ivy from contacting their plant. They’re all kinds a contact allergies going on. incidentally the incidence of eczema which used to be you know there was always a certain percentage of people with eczema. In some countries like in parts of England is pushing 20 percent the population well in the children so something is going on that a in our environment that he is pushing up the incidences skin diseases as well.”

What is Holistic Dermatology and Why Do We Need it?

“I was very interested, even as a boy, in psychosomatics and their effect on health, and that’s what I entered medical school with excitement about. I left that area after my internship eight years before psycho-immunology became psycho neuro-immunology as a legitimate field. I’ve been watching all these things develop, well after I’ve been excited about them and want to just do more and more in this area.”

“Now what does it feel like to be this person who thinks in a way that no one else thinks?”

“It’s a variety things it’s sometimes very lonely, and sometimes very exciting. Right now I’m feeling excited about it, but it is a little frustrating to be seeing what’s going to happen in the next ten or twenty years in and feel like you’re yelling in a crowded mall and nobody hears you, yes.”

“So what do you see coming down the pike in the next few years?”

“Well I think that are people in government that are going to have to make some choices, because you know for instance smoking was suspected as a problem forty, fifty, sixty years ago. People called cigarettes cancer sticks when I was a teenager, but it was not officially a dangerous pastime, even chain-smoking. People knew that it probably caused trouble, but you couldn’t go into court and say, “This is a problem; tell the guy in back of me to stop smoking in the cubicle next to me.” This it wasn’t a proven thing. We have lots and lots of things out there that are causing us tremendous harm, but they’re not proven yet, and it’ll take a generation before they’re really proven.
I think that one is the big decisions going is whether we will begin facing and getting on top of things when we suspect and have lots and lots of input and evidence that they’re causing trouble before we actually have all the death and destruction and harm that comes from it, and I think that people are going to begin to become aware that maybe we shouldn’t have to wait a full generation before we do this.”

“So what a summit the items that you’re referring to well I think is a big controversy now about a about mercury and its effect on other kinds of disorders?”

“We know there’s a lot of problems with heavy metal toxicity and there are different areas our legal structure in you know in our plan on a planet where their problems open mining of Mercury, burning high mercury fuels Cole that floats across the country, and then and then deposits in a fish that pregnant women in New York State are only allowed to eat fish once a month!

It’s going to be a problem there… so we haven’t really been able to tackle these things. That’s one the of the 80,000 chemicals that we have in use today there are creeping into our food supply, and our area, and our water, there a lot of those through causing some harming we’ve got to begin to decide whether we want to accept the burden. We’re seeing disorders that didn’t exist before, like autism which used to be a few at a hundred thousand and now are you know 130 and have whenever 130 people develop autism kids and there’s a lot of suspicion that contribution by mercury in the air, the water, by the electromagnetic forces emitted everywhere, which doesn’t help. We don’t have proof on this, but there’s a their smoke, and as one says, and you know where there’s smoke they may be fire.”

Can Natural Skin Care Improve Your Energy?

Can natural skincare improve your energy and overall wellbeing? “The question I’d like to ask you, Dr. Dattner is, what is the most rewarding thing you find about your work in holistic dermatology?”

“Seeing people get really back into the world of the living where they’ve been having chronic fatigue your digestive problems or skin problems that have kept them indoors or out of the game, and seeing them begin to feel really good about themselves, feel more energetic. I really love making a difference in people’s lives, and that’s the kind of thing that that keeps happy.”

“So, it’s encouraging them to the the well to have a good diet exercise well…”

“Yes but there are many specifics for the given individual. It’s not just good diets–it’s the kind of diet that they need, the things they need to eliminate include in order to make shifts in how their immune system is functioning how their digestive system is functioning in what parts that actually their genomes are opened up in reaction to things.”And you can get a sensor that with the tests that you do by speaking with them?”

“Yes, because you see each person is a living example in their experiences up how they react, so I get it of a lot of information from just hearing a person’s story in asking pointed questions that let me know what’s going on with the various aspects physiology.”

“Okay so your website again is holistic dermatology dot com.”
